A Message from the Dean

Welcome to Brisbane West Deanery webpage.  I hope you will explore a number of the exciting areas of pastoral involvement in our local Church.  Within the Deanery much is being celebrated this year:

  • St Ignatius School Toowong celebrates its 110th Anniversary,
  • Holy Family School Indooroopilly  celebrates its 85th Anniversary,
  • St Joseph’s Nudgee Junior College  Indooroopilly  celebrates its 75th Anniversary,
  • Our Lady of the Rosary School Kenmore celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
  • St Mark's School Inala celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference called the Catholic people in Australia to a Year of Grace, to span the time from Pentecost 2012 to Pentecost 2013. The bishops of Australia invited all Catholics to ‘walk this journey with them in faith and hope’.  The Bishops committed themselves to pray daily, seeking the mind and heart of Jesus Christ.  They committed themselves to repent for the areas in which they have failed, individually and together, seeking healing and renewal through the grace of Christ’s forgiveness. They committed themselves to the path of holiness, cultivating the many gifts of the Spirit and seeking to grow as disciples of Jesus.  Brisbane West Deanery has organised a number of key events to mark the Year of Grace in the Deanery.

The Universal Church also celebrates the Year of Faith throughout 2012 and 2013.  Pope Benedict XVI announced a special Year of Faith to help Catholics appreciate the gift of faith, deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their commitment to sharing faith with others.  This special observance of the Year of Faith began on October 11, 2012 (the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council), and will conclude on November 24, 2013(the Feast of Christ the King).

The Deanery has a Deanery Pastoral Council which meets on a regular basis to keep everyone informed of what is happening in the various Parishes.  Its aim is to plan, to network and coordinate Deanery projects.  The Deanery Pastoral Council is a representative body which, together with the Dean, and the Clergy of the Deanery, shares responsibility for promoting the nine Archdiocesan priorities within the Deanery.  It provides a forum for the discussion of Deanery and wider Church issues.

The Deanery Youth Ministry Team plans various events and activities including regular Youth Masses around the Deanery and as well as other Liturgical, Spiritual and Social gatherings.  Some of the social events are Trivia nights, Bush Walks etc.  A significant number of Young Adults from across the Deanery travelled to World Youth Day Madrid in August 2011.  This was an exciting, faith filled experience for the Pilgrims and they continue to enrich the life of the Deanery since their return.

The Deanery Projects Officer, Mr Michael Doherty does excellent work ensuring the networking of Parish and Deanery events.  To keep all the Parishes up-to-date, Michael updates this website and produces a monthly Newsletter, which have all the latest happenings.

Within the Deanery there are a number of Catholic Schools and Colleges providing excellent Catholic education for our young people.  As well, the Deanery provides a diverse range of Adult Faith Education opportunities.  This nurtures the faith understanding and spirituality of all ages.

Brisbane West Deanery has seven wonderful Parishes (Corinda Graceville, Darra Jindalee, Inala, Indooroopilly, Kenmore, St Lucia and Toowong) incorporating eleven worshipping communities all with an incredible number of activities, ministries and possibilities.  I hope you take time to explore our website.

May God’s gracious Spirit inspire you,

Very Rev Gerry Kalinowski
